Unconventional ConventionsIntroduction by Debra Di BlasiThe functions of propulsion: 1. Flee predators –> Stay in one place and you get eaten –> Death 2. Hunt food –> Stay in one place and you starve –> Death In a laboratory on some high-end campus, researchers give a virtual life form the command, "Move forward!" In water or on land, the byte-size critter finds a way to evolve in order to propel itself. I have a simple, educated theory: Life becomes. Becomes what it is not now, either more or less but never the same. Stasis begets decline, especially when compared to the rest of life that becomes more. The fiction in this issue becomes more. Is not static. Moves forward. I've asked the writers to discuss their acts of propulsion in order to help you move forward, too. Bon voyage!
